Svetlana researches the epidemiology and genetics of aneuploidies, strategies for prenatal screening of congenital and hereditary diseases, and the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia.
The main focus of her scientific and practical activities is the study of the pathogenesis and etiology of congenital and hereditary diseases and developing methods for their prevention. Under Svetlana's leadership, prenatal screening for several genetic disorders, including Down syndrome, was first introduced in Ukraine. According to foreign scientists, Svetlana has made a significant contribution to solving this issue at the international level, as she has developed several prenatal screening strategies and combinations of maternal serum markers that exist today in many countries. These strategies are considered among the most effective for prenatal diagnosis of these diseases.
Svetlana has been a scientific expert on evaluating research activities of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine since 2012. She has been the Head of the Commission on Combating Pseudoscience and Falsification of Scientific Research at the Presidium of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine since 2014. She has also been a member of the Scientific Committee of the National Council of Ukraine for the Development of Science and Technology since 2016: she is directly involved in the development and expert assessment of legislative initiatives in the field of science, the creation of a regulatory framework and the reform of the scientific sphere of Ukraine. Svetlana is also a corresponding member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and has been awarded the Certificate of Honour of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for special services to the Ukrainian people. In addition, she was a member of the Certification Board of the Ministry of Education and Science from 2018 to 2020.
