Description of the field of scientific research:

The main areas of Valentyn`s research are the chemistry of molecular diversity, in particular, the study of multicomponent reactions. He also studies and develops methods for controlling the selectivity of the reactions using traditional and non-classical methods of activation of chemical and physicochemical processes (thermal heating, microwave and ultrasonic irradiation). Valentyn also researches and establishes features and mechanisms of chemical reactions and creates and studies the properties of new functional materials, including sorption materials for various purposes, supramolecular preparations for the agro-veterinary sector, photo- and radiochromic materials.

List of duties:

Valentyn has several areas of activity. As First Deputy General Director for Science Affairs of the SSI "Institute of Single Crystals" and Director of the Division of Functional Materials Chemistry, he coordinates the development of the institution`s chemical science, pharmacy and medicinal-oriented chemistry, and other chemical areas. Valentyn is also the head of the department of organic and bioorganic chemistry, whose main activities are related to organic synthesis and chemistry of heterocyclic compounds, the development of medical and pharmaceutical chemistry.

In addition, as the Head of the Department of Applied Chemistry at V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Valentyn is responsible for organizing the educational and scientific processes of the department and teaching disciplines to university students.

Professional experience:

After completing his postgraduate studies, Valentyn started working at the SSI "Institute for Single Crystals" of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1999, he held the position of junior researcher there. From 2001 to 2002, he was promoted to senior researcher, and from 2002 to December 2010, he served as academic secretary. From 2011 to 2014, Valentyn was Deputy Director General for Science Affairs. From 2014 to 2017, he was Acting Director General.

Valentyn has been First Deputy General Director for Science Affairs since 2017 and the Director of the Division of Functional Materials Chemistry since 2014.

In addition, from 2008 to 2022, Valentyn was also the Head of the Laboratory of Physicochemical Processes at the SSI "Institute of Single Crystals of NASU. From 2012 to the present, he has been the Head of the Department of Applied Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. Since 2023 he has also been the Head of the Department of Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry.  Since 2024 Director, Institute of Functonal Materials Chemistry.

In his scientific activities, Valentyn participated in research and internships abroad. For example, he worked as a postdoc at the Karl-Franz-Universität Graz, was a visiting scholar at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, a visiting professor at the Catholic University of Leuven and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, and a mentor at the University of Konstanz. He was also a mentor at Artvin-Chorukh University in Turkey.

Valentyn is also an expert of the Belgian scientific foundation Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek, a member of the working group on the rotation of sections in professional areas of the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and is engaged in the examination of scientific projects for the National Research Foundation of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Valentyn is the Chairman of the Chemical Sciences Section of the Council of the North-Eastern Scientific Center of the National Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. He is a member of the Dissertation Council of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. He was also a member of the attestation commission for inspecting the Institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. And since 2025 — Academician of NAS of Ukraine.

In addition, Valentyn was a member of the working group of the Committee on Science and Education of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on preparing the draft Law of Ukraine "On Scientific and Scientific-Technical Activities." He also prepared the current version of the Law of Ukraine "On Higher Education."

Valentyn is a member of the editorial boards of such journals as Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, American Journal of Organic Chemistry, Functional Materials, and others.
