Valery is an entomologist, a specialist in the systematics of Diptera insects (flies and mosquitoes), in particular, true fruit flies and related families in the scope of the world fauna, invasive, quarantine species and biological control agents for weeds.
Since 1978, Valery has worked as a junior researcher at the Faculty of Biology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and, since 1986, as a senior researcher at the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Plant Protection.
Since 1989, Valery has held the position of Leading Researcher at the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Since 2007 - Head of the Department of Entomology at the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and since 2021 - Deputy Director for Research at the same Institute.
The scientist has also been a member of the Ukrainian Entomological Society since 1978 (since 2013, he has been Vice President). In addition, he has been a member of the editorial board of the journals Zoodiversity (deputy editor-in-chief) and Ukrainska Entomofaunistyka (editor-in-chief) since 1996 and the monographic series Fauna of Ukraine since 2014.
Valery is also a member of the National Commission on the Red Data Book of Ukraine, an expert of the Joint Competition Commission for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Prize for Young Scientists and a nominal scholarship of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for young scientists - doctors of sciences and a reviewer of scientific articles in the journals Systematic Entomology, Zootaxa, etc.
