Description of the field of scientific research:

Maksym studies forest ecosystem dynamics; remote sensing of forests; dead wood; carbon budget and ecosystem services of forests; modeling fire behavior in forests and landscapes; mapping damage to forest ecosystems from military operations in Ukraine.

List of duties:

He is a postdoc at the Swedish University of Agriculture. He studies forest ecosystems at the landscape level using ground and satellite data and forest dynamics in Ukraine and Sweden.

Professional experience:

From 2018 to 2022, Maksym was a graduate student at the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine; from 2020 to 2022 - a GIS analyst at the international NGO IMPACT Initiatives; from 2022 - a postdoc at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

In addition, in 2022, Maksym was an expert of the Expert Group of the State Ecological Inspection of Ukraine, and from 2023 to 2024, he was a reviewer in the scientific journals Forests, Fire, Remote Sensing (MDPI) and Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research (Taylor & Francis).

  • Emergency measures to collect data in war-affected pine forests in Ukraine

Forest fires can negatively impact forests, infrastructure, and human well-being. Climate change is increasing the frequency of summer droughts, which in turn favors forest fires, which can be difficult to extinguish.

    Role: Head of the project

Basic scientific publications:

  • War drives forest fire risks and highlights the need for more ecologically-sound forest management in post-war Ukraine
