Role: Scientist
Ph.D.
Mariia studies protein biosynthesis, enzymology of protein synthesis, and inhibitors of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. She also investigates fast kinetics and cryo-electron microscopy methods. She is interested in the structural basis of ribosome decoding of modified mRNAs, mechanisms of resistance to ribosome-targeting antibiotics, and mechanisms of ribosome hibernation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Mariia is a postdoctoral fellow in Structural Biology in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, The University of Texas Medical Branch. Her research interests are focused on the study of molecular mechanisms of protein biosynthesis using cryo-electron microscopy, macromolecular X-ray crystallography, and fast kinetics methods.
From 2013 to 2016, Mariia worked as a postgraduate student at the Department of Enzymology of Protein Synthesis at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the NAS of Ukraine. From 2016 to 2020, she held the position of a junior researcher in the same department, and from 2020 to 2023, Mariia worked as a researcher. Since 2021, she has continued her scientific career as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at The University of Texas Medical Branch.
In addition, from 2012 to 2023, Maria was a member of the Federation of the European Biochemical Society. From 2019 to 2021, she served as Deputy Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the National NAS of Ukraine.
Also, in 2021, Mariia became a member of the National Postdoc Association (NPA), and in 2023 she became a member of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
