Description of the field of scientific research:

Sergiy's research interests include biological systematics and molecular phylogenetics. He also studies molecular evolution, speciation, biodiversity conservation, parasitology, and medical biology. In addition, he is interested in invertebrate zoology, notably leeches and leech-like ringworms.

List of duties:

Professor of the Department of Zoology and Animal Ecology at the Faculty of Biology of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is interested in the use of genomic methodologies, in particular DNA barcoding, to assess the biodiversity of Ukraine and the World Ocean, as well as to determine the impact on biodiversity of several anthropogenic factors, climate change, and military operations.

Professional experience:

Sergiy worked as an engineer from 1991 to 2012, as an assistant from 2003, an associate professor from 2004-2015, and a professor from 2015 at the Department of Zoology and Animal Ecology at the Faculty of Biology of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

In different years, Sergiy was also a member of the Scientific Committee of the National Council of Ukraine for the Development of Science and Technology, the expert group for evaluating the effectiveness of scientific institutions (Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), and the specialized academic council.

In addition, Sergiy was an expert on the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) of the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) and co-author of the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Switzerland.

He was also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Limnology and Freshwater Fisheries Research and the Ukrainian Antarctic Journal.

The scientist has worked as a reviewer for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), as well as for many international zoological journals such as Systematic Parasitology (Springer Nature), Zootaxa, Magnolia Press, New Zealand; "Zookeys, Pensoft, Bulgaria; Comparative Parasitology, BioOne, USA; Parasitology Research, Springer, Germany; Zoosystema, BioOne, USA; Biologia, De Gruyter, Germany; Hydrobiologia, Springer, Germany, etc.
