He is interested in the history of the church, religious culture, education, and literacy of the early modern and modern periods.
Maksym also worked as the secretary of the Scientific and Methodological Commission on History at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in 2007. From 2009 to 2011, he was a member of the International Association of Humanities, in 2022, a member of the Ukrainian Society for the Study of the Eighteenth Century, and in 2023, a member of the Ivan Franko International Prize jury.
From 2002 to the present day, Maksym has been the head of the Research Center “Heritage of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. He has also been teaching at the Department of History at NaUKMA (he has been the Head of the Department since 2023) and working as a senior researcher at the National Museum of History of Ukraine since 2016.
In addition, since 2004, Maksym has been a member of the editorial board of the “Kyiv Academy” journal (since 2021 — editor-in-chief), since 2016 - a member of the editorial board of the annual “Scientific Bulletin of the National Museum of History of Ukraine,” since 2018 — of the Scientific and Methodological and Scientific Council of the National Museum of History of Ukraine, since 2019 — of the editorial board of the scientific annual “History of Religions in Ukraine” and the journal “Scientific Notes of NaUKMA. Historical Sciences.”
From 2013-2021, he was also a member of the international advisory board.
