About us

Author(-s):

Science at Risk is a digital platform and community of Ukrainian scientists suffering from Russia's military aggression. We are telling the world how Ukrainian scientists and institutions are coping with the challenges of war and accumulating unique expertise in crisis management. And we also help donors, journalists, foreign scientists and other interested parties to establish contacts with Ukrainian specialists.

Due to the full-scale invasion of Russia, 15% of the Ukrainian scientific infrastructure was damaged. According to the UA Science Reload survey, 88.2% of scientists remained in Ukraine. Of these, 72.9% responded that they could not continue their research to the extent that it was before the full-scale invasion.

Our mission

We strive to help Ukrainian scientists suffering from the war to be heard and visible in the world, as well as to contribute to the preservation and restoration of Ukrainian science.

Directions of work

1. Our expert groups analyze challenges in science that arose because of the Russian-Ukrainian war and look for ways to overcome them. All results of their work are available on our website as white papers.

2. We regularly publish data on damaged and destroyed Ukrainian research infrastructure.  We record the scale of the destruction, contacts, and the amount of financial resources needed for restoration.

3. We collect a database of experts. Here you can search for Ukrainian specialists by scientific field or contact information.

4. We show the consequences of the war for science through the stories of people and institutions.

Our vision

Now Science at Risk is a digital platform for everyone who cares about science and the war in Ukraine. But we dream of building walls and creating a physical Center for Excellence in Science one day. After all, now Ukrainian scientists are acquiring unique knowledge and skills. This expertise can help people around the world prepare for the challenges of war or natural disasters.
