Olga Vasyliuk

Ph.D., associate professor

Languages for professional communication:

Ukrainian, English

Description of the field of scientific research:

Olga studies the human microbiome, the biodiversity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in fresh and fermented foods. In addition, she looks lactic acid bacteria with probiotic properties, their interaction with other bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and the ability of bacteria to form biofilms as one of the main methods of protecting their existence. She also studies the inhibition of biofilm formation, which helps reduce infectious processes in hospitals, and the selection of starter cultures for fermenting vegetable raw materials.

List of duties:

Olga is a microbiologist at the D.K. Zabolotnyi Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. She is interested in the fermentation of products of plant and animal origin, the use of lactic acid bacteria as biopreservatives, inhibitors of foreign microbiota in food, and the use of microorganisms to ferret waste from various industries to produce secondary metabolites.

Professional experience:

From 2012 to 2015, Olga worked as an engineer of the first category in the Department of Physiology of Industrial Microorganisms at the D.K. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. From 2015 to 2017, she worked as a junior researcher in the Department of Physiology of Industrial Microorganisms at the same institute, and from 2017 to 2021, she worked as a researcher.

In 2021, Olga became a senior researcher at the Laboratory of Microbial Synthesis Biotechnology at the D.K. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

In addition, since 2012, Olga has been a member of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies, since 2017 – the Vinogradsky Society of Microbiologists of Ukraine, and since 2023 she has been an expert of the National Research Foundation of Ukraine.
